ORION MN 18 plus (Manganese steel)
The harder, the better?
We quickly moved away from that idea many years ago when we tried to optimize the service life of steel cutting edges. Even the best tool steels, such as those used in large excavators, did not deliver convincing results in snow plow applications. Our extensive testing clearly showed that only a balanced ratio of hardness and toughness ensures outstanding durability.
Our manganese steel blade, with a manganese content of at least 18%, perfectly meets these requirements. The unique balance between yield strength and hardness guarantees exceptional wear resistance. The material continuously work-hardens at the contact surface with the road, making any subsequent machining, such as drilling or sawing, impossible.
That’s why all recesses and holes for common plow types are precisely cast into the blade. ORION MN 18 plus blades of the same length (drilled and clamped versions) are fully compatible with various plow models. Simplifying storage and logistics.
The professional choice in snow plow blades
ORION III Kombi Korund (Combination)
Steel – Rubber – Steel with corundum (Al₂O₃) insert. We use only high-alloy, hardened steels with a minimum hardness of 400 HB. The contact surfaces between steel and rubber are carefully prepared to ensure a strong bond during vulcanization.
Corundum, second only to diamond in hardness, is embedded in the rubber in rod form to act as a wear inhibitor in the composite blade. Corundum is extremely hard but also brittle. Protected by the steel reinforcement and vulcanized into flexible rubber, it delivers exceptional abrasion resistance.
